Aim of this study This study was part of an HSE project on the risks associated with refuse collection. Having identified a range of manual handling hazards from the literature, a short field study was carried out to examine the typical hazards from manual handling in urban refuse collection in the UK. The purposes were to make quantitative assessments of some of the risk factors and to make relevant recommendations on manual handling risk control strategies and to report additional findings on other risk factors and to make recommendations for their control.
