Rather, the paradox of "underdevelopment" ensued, in which high rates of economic growth were coupled with a deepening impoverishment of the rural majority. The causes of underdevelopment in the Third World became a central issue among political economists, with two distinct orientations emerging in the post-World War II period. By the 1970s and 1980s, political economists were engaged in an acrimonious debate between adherents of world systems and neo-Marxist theories of capitalist development in the postcolonial.

Apart from the theoretical intent of the work, I hope above all that the following ethnography recreates something of the character and lives of rural Belizeans. Despite the isolation occasionally encountered in ethnographic research, fieldwork and writing are never undertaken alone, of course. Long before departing for the field, my ideas were influenced by many teachers and colleagues through the twin processes of emulation and critique. One of the first of these scholars was Mike Chibnik, who provided me with a detailed baseline ethnography and a role model of anthropologist as teacher.
