35 It was a difficult life, requiring an austere commitment to learning, limited to those who possessed the requisite training. Such intimate relations were not simply among students and scholars, who lived as equals, but extended to the more hierarchical relations between masters and pupils. Friendship in its academic and personal forms became a defining influence on John Calvin. In accordance with the principles of classical and humanist friendship, Calvin expected much: his friends should promote his work and use it in their teaching, and he was anxiously solicitous about sales and reception.

The raw emotions that poured forth later at the loss of his infant son and wife, as well as at the death of close friends, counter any sense of a Calvin hewn from stone. It is more likely that in 1531 he was masking feelings and emotions which had not yet found articulation. Only after his conversion and in his biblical commentaries, in the stories of the Old and New Testaments, and particularly in the psalms, did he find an emotional vocabulary inaccessible to a young man of twenty-two. Following the death of his father Calvin returned once more to Paris, finding various places to stay before taking up residence in the Collège de Fortet in the Latin Quarter.

It was Lefèvre, not Luther, who shaped French evangelical thought in the 1520s, and the German reformer’s writings were read through the lens of the French humanist. Lefèvre’s importance lay not only in his call for the renewal of spirituality and his translations of scripture into French; he was an iconic figure – a symbol of French humanist achievement and the possibility of church reform. His was an Olympian status which neither Erasmus nor Luther could achieve, and it made Lefèvre all the more dangerous in the eyes of his opponents.
