I added wiring looms for each electrical box, plus a group of connecting cables. I was not looking forward to bundling tiny individual wires for this task so instead I used six-stranded picture hanging wire. The pre-bundled wires were simply bent to shape then cut to size. Thin strips of Tamiya tape were used as retaining straps on the connecting bundle. I also drilled out the ends of the 30mm cannon barrels but this proved to be a wasted effort as they are completely covered by the nose-piece.

The Luftwaffe reaped the benefit of this advanced research with a number of practical designs and the world’s first operational jet fighter. The cost to Germany was a lost opportunity to standardize and mass-produce conventional fighter aircraft – a decision that may have had an effect on the duration of the war, if not the actual result. In this chapter, we examine some of the early jet aircraft designs, and build Eduard’s 1/48-scale Heinkel He 280, the world’s first jet fighter. The Heinkel He 280 was the world’s first jet fighter, taking its first powered flight on 2 April 1941.
